Smoke Alarms And Your Home: Is Your Family Safe?
Smoke alarms are one of the most important things to put into your home to keep your family safe. The U.S. Fire Administration, a part of Homeland Security, reported that more than 3600 people lost their lives to fires in 2005 with thousands more being injured. Even more horrifying is the fact that some 1.6 million fires are reported annually in the country, at various levels. Many more go unreported.
What does this mean to you? Many of the fires that start in the home are fires that can be prevented. Even when a fire does happen you can save your own life as well as that of your family's if you have properly installed and working smoke alarms in your home.
A smoke alarm can save your life by signaling to you that there is smoke in the home. It provides you with an early warning that will alert you and all of those in your home to the potential risk. They are an inexpensive yet very effective way of keeping your family safe.
Installing Smoke Alarms
Do you have smoke alarms in your home? Do you even know where they should be placed? The Fire Administration says that you should have smoke alarms on every level of your home which also includes your basement. In addition, you should have them both inside and outside of the area in which you sleep since many fires happen while people sleep. Place smoke alarms on the ceiling, or on the wall but no more than six inches below the height of the ceiling.
Every home needs to have several smoke alarms installed. You can purchase them rather inexpensively at home improvement stores. Often, local fire departments can provide you with some low cost alarms if you ask for them. Most importantly, change the batteries in your smoke alarm. When you change the clocks back or ahead, change the batteries in your alarm as well.
Securing your home is essential to saving your family's life and safeguarding all that you've worked for.
