Home Safety Plan: How It Can Save Your Life
A home safety plan is a plan that allows you and your family to safely handle emergency situations as they arise. If you have one, then you are likely to be more successful at making it through the emergency without the loss of life or property. Yet, many people have not put a plan in writing, which is a simple process that can ultimately save your life.
What Goes Into A Safety Plan?
There are many things that should be considered by you and your family when it comes to designing a home safety plan. For starters, make sure that all family members contribute to designing a plan that works. Here are some important considerations for any plan.
  1. Protecting from fires is #1 priority. If there is a fire in your home, how can family members escape from each room of the home? When they get out, where should you all meet to insure that everyone did make it out? Do you have working fire alarms and fire extinguishers in the home?
  2. Protecting from other natural disasters. Plan for other natural disasters that happen, such as earthquakes, tornados and severe thunderstorms. Each person should know what to do in these cases, where they should be and how to stay safe.
  3. Emergency numbers. Make a list of all of the emergency numbers available so that you can have instant access to them. This should include police, ambulance, and fire authorities as well as the poison hotline. Post these on your refrigerator or near a phone. Make sure that children know how to get in contact with their parents at all times of the day.
Your home safety plan should also include the tools that you need to survive. You should have a kit that is full of medical supplies, bottled water, batteries and any medications that you need to take on an ongoing basis. Take your plan to the next level by making sure that your children are fully aware of the details of your home safety plan.
A home safety plan is a requirement for any family that wants to stay safe. Your home is your safest location, but only you can keep it safe.
